| | 25/5/2008 U14 Wanderers 2 - Wootton Blue Cross 4 The end of the season arrived with weather more like November than May, turning this match into one where players had to dig deep & battle hard against driving rain & the opposition. Woodside showed they had the determination to do this. Wootton scored the opening goal, but Tom Holloway levelled the score with another well taken opportunity. Shane Tiffen acting skipper marshalled the team well and was joint MoM with his defensive team mate Luke Taylor. Michael Flanery took on the role of lone striker causing Wootton’s defence problems. Wootton regained their lead before half time. Overall a good 1st half performance especially from Gary Wells, Luke Rhodes, Gavin Russell & Sam Hurley. The restart saw Woodside determined to get something from this game. Daniel Blythe in central midfield made several surging runs. Michael Johnson finally netted only to see his goal disallowed. Matt Forbes showing what a skilful player he is, pounced on a loose ball to equalise, after Josh Walton put the keeper under pressure. Keeper Robin Corston outstanding this season made several great saves before Wootton finally managed to beat him. | |
| | 18/5/2008 U14 Wanderers 4 - Downs Barns 3 Initially both sides were evenly matched with neither able to gain the upper hand. The breakthrough came when Tom Holloway struck home a curving free kick. Michael Johnson at the back post was unlucky not to gain the final touch. Woodside then went on to dominate. The visitors were continually placed under pressure by the long kicks of keeper Robin Corston. Superior play by the home side eventually resulted in a hat trick for Mark Mitchell who has amassed an amazing 40 goals this season. Right Midfielder Michael Flanery as usual full of power & pace. Luke Taylor was again dominant behind central defenders Luke Rhodes & Sam Hurley who both had good games. Right back Shane Tiffen again looked confident. In central midfield Daniel Blythe & Skipper Mitchell O’Connor worked well together. Half time saw Wanderers leading 4 – 0. A reshuffle saw Gary Wells, Sam Hill & Matt Forbes introduced. To their credit Downs Barn did not lie down, and staged a spirited fight back which placed Woodside on the back foot, and clawed back 3 goals. A nervous last few minutes saw Woodside hold on to gain a well deserved victory. | |
| | 4/5/2008 U14 Wanderers 4 - Bromham Youth Lions 4 WANDERERS BECOME THE ONLY TEAM THIS SEASON TO TAKE POINTS OFF LEAGUE LEADERS BROMHAM YOUTH LIONS
Woodside came into this match after two poor performances with defeats against Two Mile Ash & Wootton Blue Cross. There had been tough talking at the training session, which the players responded to. A tactical change saw Luke Taylor perform well in a sweeper role behind a defence of Sam Hill, Shane Tiffen, Sam Hurley & Gary Wells. Despite some very good play Woodside went 2 – 0 down before a battling performance from striker Mark Mitchell resulted in a goal. Luck was also with the Woodies today as Bromham twice hit the cross bar & wasted a penalty. Midfielders Michael Flanery, Mitchell O’Connor Daniel Blythe & Michael Johnson today showed what can be achieved. MoM Johnson gave a particularly hard working performance. Bromham continued to apply pressure & lengthened their lead to 4 – 1. Keeper Robin Corston again called on to make saves to keep the score down. Subs Luke Rhodes, Matt Forbes, Connor Howard & Tom Holloway slotted in well. Digging deep Woodside then pulled out a superb performance. Excellent team work provided Mitchell with 3 more goals. A draw against a side who had won all their previous 19 games was a magnificent result today. | |
